Step 1: Get Organized

  • Obtain the death certificate and locate the will

  • Identify heirs, beneficiaries, and key contacts

  • Secure the home, vehicles, and valuables

  • Gather important documents (deeds, bank statements, insurance, tax records)

Step 2: Start the Probate Process

  • File the will with the probate court

  • Petition to be officially appointed as executor

  • Notify heirs, beneficiaries, and known creditors

Step 3: Manage the Estate

  • Open a dedicated estate bank account

  • Collect money owed to the estate (pensions, refunds, rental income)

  • Inventory and appraise all assets

  • Keep property insured, safe, and maintained

Step 4: Pay Obligations

  • Review, validate, and pay outstanding debts

  • Cover funeral and administrative expenses

  • File the deceased’s final income tax return

  • Pay estate or inheritance taxes if required

Step 5: Distribute & Close the Estate

  • Provide heirs and the court with an accounting of estate activity

  • Distribute remaining assets according to the will or court order

  • Obtain court approval for final distribution

  • Close the estate officially
