Step 1: Get Organized
Obtain the death certificate and locate the will
Identify heirs, beneficiaries, and key contacts
Secure the home, vehicles, and valuables
Gather important documents (deeds, bank statements, insurance, tax records)
Step 2: Start the Probate Process
File the will with the probate court
Petition to be officially appointed as executor
Notify heirs, beneficiaries, and known creditors
Step 3: Manage the Estate
Open a dedicated estate bank account
Collect money owed to the estate (pensions, refunds, rental income)
Inventory and appraise all assets
Keep property insured, safe, and maintained
Step 4: Pay Obligations
Review, validate, and pay outstanding debts
Cover funeral and administrative expenses
File the deceased’s final income tax return
Pay estate or inheritance taxes if required
Step 5: Distribute & Close the Estate
Provide heirs and the court with an accounting of estate activity
Distribute remaining assets according to the will or court order
Obtain court approval for final distribution
Close the estate officially
